Wednesday was a night of mixed emotions – there was impending excitement about the incredible Foals headlining the Rocks stage, but also the knowledge that this was the last gig of the 2013 season. Luckily we’re not ones to dwell on doom and gloom, and the stonking line up and some of the finest live music around meant things inevitably went off with a bang. If it’s the last gig of the year then you may as well make it count after all.
Jagwar Ma are the sort of band that can make you lose yourself. Watching them is like an attack on the senses; you’re bombarded by erratic beats, electronic rhythms and haunting, falsetto vocals. Their indefinable style combined with hypnotic lighting lulls you into a psychedelic trance that’s hard to escape so everyone dances with arms flailing, mesmerised by the show in front of them. With their sound echoing around Rocks they led seamlessly into the hard-hitting set from Foals.
Foals are undoubtedly a band at their peak, and last night’s performance left no one in any doubt that they’re one of the best live acts of the moment. Lasers signalled their arrival on stage in emphatic style and to roars of approval from the crowd they launched into tunes like ‘Olympic Airways’, ‘Sahara’ and ‘Inhaler’. Foals music is good for the soul; it has you bopping shamelessly, raving like your life depends on it. And when you go as hard as they do on stage, it just serves as inspiration for the crowd to get on board – we’re in this together, copious amounts of dance-induced sweat and all. As their set unfurled happy vibes reverberated around the venue creating a kind of euphoria that’s the unique result of watching amazing live music and being able to fully let yourself go. Foals don’t do things by halves, they thrash their instruments like hard rockers, hardly coming up for air, and the crowd lap up every note, spellbound by the music. Last night was even better than could have predicted: the season was sealed with a big, fat sloppy kiss. And so it’s goodbye to a year of epic Rocks gigs, but hello to some incredible memories. Bring on 2014.
